How to print checks online

To print checks online, load blank check stock into a laser printer, enter your business and bank details once in an online check writer, type the payee and amount, and print the PDF at 100% scale. Sign it and the check is ready.

Step by step

Get blank check stock. 8.5 x 11 in sheets with the check on top, in the middle or on the bottom, or 3 checks per page. Choose stock with security features.
Enter your details. Business name and address, bank name, the 9-digit routing number and your account number. Copy them from the bottom of an existing check or your bank's website. The tool checks that the routing number is valid.
Write the check. Payee, amount, date and memo. The amount in words and the MICR line are filled in automatically.
Run an alignment test. Print the test page on plain paper, hold it over your check stock against a window and nudge the offsets until the fields line up.
Print at actual size. In the print dialog choose 100% or “Actual size”, never “Fit to page”: scaling moves the MICR line out of position.
Sign and record. Sign by hand, note the check in your register and keep the stub.

Can I print checks on plain paper?

Use plain paper only for the alignment test. Real checks belong on check stock with security features, which banks and payees expect and which makes alteration harder.

Will my bank accept checks I print myself?

Banks accept checks printed by businesses every day when the MICR line, routing number and size follow the standards. Ask your bank to test the first one. See MICR check printing.

How do I make a voided check for direct deposit?

Use the “Voided check” button in the check writer: it prints your check with VOID across it and the correct routing and account numbers.
