Check printing software for small business
Check printing software lays out a complete check (payee, amount in words, your business and bank details and the MICR line) so you can print it on blank check stock with an ordinary laser printer, instead of buying pre-printed checks.
What it should do
- Print the MICR line correctly. Routing number, account number and check number in E-13B characters, in the right positions along the bottom edge. Banks process checks by this line.
- Work with your paper. Blank check stock with the check on top, middle or bottom, 3 checks per page, or pre-printed checks where only the variable fields are filled in.
- Write the amount in words and fill empty space with asterisks so nobody can add to it.
- Number and log every check. A check register with voids and an export makes bank reconciliation and positive pay easy.
- Print a batch. If you pay several vendors at once, import them from your accounting software or a spreadsheet.
- Keep bank details safe. Ask where account numbers are stored. CheckWriter.app keeps them in your browser only.
Three kinds of check printing software
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero) | Checks tied to bills and the general ledger | Usually expects compatible pre-printed checks; layouts limited to the vendor's formats |
| Desktop check programs | Offline use on one computer | Install and updates on each PC; data stuck on that machine |
| Online check writers | Any computer, no install, quick start | Some add mailing, eChecks or per-check credits you may not need |
What it costs
Online check printing services range from free single checks to monthly plans. For example, Checkeeper lists a Basic plan from $14.99 per month (Capterra, October 2026). CheckWriter.app prints single checks free and costs $9 per month for Pro: saved accounts and payees, a check register, batch printing from CSV and 3 checks per page. We only print: no mailing and no money movement, so there are no per-check fees.
What you need besides software
- Blank check stock with security features (microprint, void pantograph, chemical-sensitive paper).
- A laser printer. MICR toner is recommended for the most reliable bank reads; see MICR check printing.
- A test: print one check and ask your bank to run it before you pay real bills.
Try it free. Print a check on blank stock in your browser, with an alignment test page and a voided check for direct deposit forms.
Print a free checkQuestions
Is check printing software legal?
Yes, for accounts you own or are authorized to sign on. Printing checks on someone else's account without authority is fraud.
Do I need special ink?
Not always, but MICR toner is the safe choice. Many checks are cleared as images today, yet a poorly printed MICR line still causes read errors and rejects.
Can I use it with QuickBooks?
Yes. Export bills or payees to CSV and print them with Pro. See how to print checks in QuickBooks.
